Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserved continued its “measured” restrictive monetary policy by raising its key interest rate to 2.75%.The Federal Reserve mentioned the big I-word (inflation) in its statement saying “..Though longer-term inflation expectations remain well contained, pressures on inflation have picked up in recent months and pricing power is more evident..” , which may be an indication the Fed is going to be more aggressive in raising interest rates in the future.
Wholesale Inflation Up (sort of)
Wholesale inflation was up in February, but most of the increase is attributed to higher energy costs.
IBM Spamming Spammers
IBM announced a new product to aid in alleviating email spam by essentially spamming the spammers.IBM indicated the percent volume of spam transmitted on the Internet has been decreasing, due largely to the implementation of various forms of anti-spamming technology.IBM has dubbed its new anti-spamming technology FairUCE (“Fair use of Unsolicited Commercial Email”).
GM Cutting Salaried Staff
GM is reducing is North American salaried work force.Faced with decreased market share and rising costs, GM is reducing its white-collar work force.

Alcoa announced plans to reduce its work force by 2,000 jobs, 1.5% of its work force.

Toys “R” Us is being acquired by a consortium.The consortium includes Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Vornado Realy Trust.Toys “R” Us has been on the auction block for several months now, and has turned into a real-estate play, as Toys “R” Us has many attractive retail store locations.
Oracle is acquiring retail software developer Retek.
InterActiveCorp (IAC) acquires Ask Jeeves provider of Internet search engine.

Gas
Gas prices hit an all time high according to the American Automobile Association.The AAA said the average price for unleaded gasoline reached $2.055.The previous high was reached in May of 2004 at $2.054.
