According to the Federal Reserve’s “beige book”, U.S. businesses experience moderate economic growth the first two months of this year.The “beige book” also indicated retail prices were steady overall.Michael Moskow, Chicago Federal Reserve President, said given the, “low level of inflation, well-contained inflationary expectations, and the remaining slack in the economy, we believe we can remove the remaining policy accommodation at a pace that is likely to be measured.”

The National Association of Realtors said pending home sales fell 2.1% in January from December.

Carnival says cruise ship bookings are up as are prices.
Acquisitions
BAE Systems, a British defense contractor, agreed to buy United Defense Industries, the manufacturer of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.Capital One Financial is getting into the retail banking business with the acquisition of the New Orleans bank Hibernia. Microsoft acquires Groove Networks, maker of collaboration software. The founder of Groove, Ray Ozzie, will become the chief technical officer of Microsoft.
China
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao projects China’s investment growth will slow this year.China’s high rate of economic growth has led to overinvestment in infrastructure and the Chinese government is concerned the high rate of growth could lead to an economy which is out of control.Mr. Wen did not make any comments regarding valuation of China’s currency the yaun against other currencies.Several of China’s trading partners have urged China to revalue the yaun or allow it to float, but China thus far has been reluctant heed their recommendations.
Oil
The price of oil has been acting up again, over $50 per barrel.Some oil analysts predict oil to spike to over $60 this year.
Jobs
Monster Founder Jeff Taylor emphasized that job postings increased in the U.S. in February.Employers added 262,000 non-farm jobs to their payrolls in February, the best hiring performance in four months.

Martha Stewart was released from prison after serving 5 months in a West Virginia prison, now she begins serving the home detention part of her sentence.
