Alan Greenspan before the Committee on the Budget, U.S. House of Representatives
In Alan Greenspan’s testimony before the Committee on the Budget of the U.S. House of Representatives, he reiterated the U.S. economy’s solid performance in 2004. Mr. Greenspan emphasized the need for budget discipline for continued future economic growth. Mr. Greenspan acknowledged the decisions regarding the future retirement of the baby boom generation would require making difficult decisions. Alan Greenspan confirmed his support for private accounts for Social Security.
U.S. Manufacturing
U.S. manufacturing continued its expansion in February, although at a slower pace compared to previous months. Manufacturers are still experiencing rising prices but the rate of change in rising prices has slowed.
Housing
The appreciation in the prices of housing appears to be slowing. Home prices rose 1.7% in the fourth quarter compared to a 4.8% increase in the third quarter. Sales of new homes also appear to be slowing, but sales of new homes remain historically high.
GDP
GDP increased 3.8% in the fourth quarter of 2004. Major contributors to GDP growth were personal expenditures, equipment and software and private inventory investment.
Bill Gates
Microsoft founder Bill Gates is now an honorary knight as he received an honorary knighthood for his efforts in health and poverty programs. However, Mr. Gates should not be addressed as “Sir” as that distinction is reserved for British citizens.
Retailers
Retailers reported strong results for the month of February. Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney, Talbot’s, Ann Taylor Stores, Neiman Marcus Group and Nordstrom all reported healthy sales for the month of February.
Worker’s
Fourth quarter’s worker productivity of 2.1% was an improvement over the third quarter’s 1.3% rate, and initial jobless claims fell by a 1000 in the last week of February.
European Central Bank
The European Central Bank did not change interest rates as the European economies are still showing anemic economic growth.
